My name is Jenny. I'm so glad to be a creative contributor here at Hideous! Dreadful! Stinky!.
I am a textile crafter and I call myself "The Bushcrafter". I am a soul-centered creator and also an artist and teacher. In me, I have some sort of fabric spirit who wants, pretty much, nothing else but to create. So I let it.
You know. Let spirit be what spirit is.
I would say we are all crafters. In one way, or another. When I'm faced with a problem, I try to solve it by using what I have. That's crafting for me. I enjoy melding crafting and recycling together, making the ordinary into beauty.
Here at Hideous! Dreadful! Stinky! I am committed to explore different crafts that involves working and creating together with children. It will be so much fun for me to share my ideas with all you readers out there!
Today I´m sharing how to make earrings. We are gonna do this by actually weaving our "fabric", this is a simple and fun way for your child to get familiar with the weaving technique. By weaving we get the chance to choose colours and be there through the whole design process. You truly are designing your own earrings.
How do you do it then, you might ask! It is easy and fun so lets get starting.
First! Step outside with your daughter and visit a coffee shop, buy a big cookie and sit down together. Very important! Then keep going to your local yarn store and let your daughter pick her colours! You are looking for a thin cotton thread of some sort, no need to hesitate, just go for what is pretty. And don't forget to choose your own colours, cause we are doing this together! Lovely right! This means you get your own earrings!
Create an simple frame for weaving out of cardboard (visit the link to see how I did it).
Start to weave. You can weave straight over, or do like me, I tried to weave in a V shape to make a more interesting pattern. This is the fun part, so try different shapes and different colours! The longer you make it the more earrings you can get out of it.
Take decoupage, Mod Podge, varnish to seal the deal. Use a brush and paint the surface. It makes the fabric harder and shiny. Now you can start cutting out the shape of the earrings, without it falling apart. It will be thick and firm.
Now you can cut the shapes you want. Why not make heart shapes, stars or letters!
When you have cut out your shapes, paint them a second time with shiny varnish to make them sparkle.
You are finished! Now you can assemble them into earrings.
