Skirt No. 1: Patched Street Fair Skirt

Here is my first skirt, and I am so proud of it! Do you recognize the pattern? It's the Street Fair Skirt from marie-madeline studio. The Long ladies were kind enough to send me my own pattern and fabric bundle, which was awesome because I can never win those dang blog giveaways! I had a really hard time deciding which fabrics to choose, so I picked a single fabric, the Darla Rose in Butter, and asked them to send me a surprise bundle based on it, and they sent me this beautiful collection.
The photo, by the way, was taken my little photographer, Huck! He did such a great job, and is the perfect height to take an artfully low-angled pic :)
Back to the skirt! I don't know how many hours total it took me to put this thing together, but in the end it is the most well-constructed piece I have ever sewn. I usually am a slap-dash kinda sewist. I kind of put things together on the fly and mostly wing it and hope I end up with something halfway decent. This skirt does not mess around! There were facings and twill tape and an invisible zipper (I used Kay Whitt's tutorial to help me out with that one since I don't have/(can't find in my crafting disaster zone) an invisible zipper foot). And OY! with the ironing! But in the end, this is such a professional looking piece that I can hardly believe I made it.

By the way, if you love this combo, lots of their fabrics, including the Darla collection, are on sale for 20-25% off over at marie-madeline. The sale ends today.

Milo (age almost-3) helped take a picture, too:

Index of Posts for The Summer of No Pants 2011!

Woo-hoo! That's it for the Inspiration portion of the Summer of No Pants! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of my guest bloggers for all of the hours spent putting together fantastic tutorials, scouring the Internet for inspirational round-ups, and reviewing patterns for my readers. And special thanks to the SONP sponsors for offering such fun giveaways! Please support these small business owners and take advantage of some of the great promo codes that will continue as the sewing challenge begins.

Now it's up to you to take all of these beautiful tutorials and round-ups, roll those ideas around in that creative mind of yours, and rev up those sewing machines!

Join the Flickr Group and share your projects. Introduce yourself, tell us what worked, what didn't work, and share your blog posts about your new wardrobes. I'll be showing off our projects here over the next four weeks! And remember, this is a personal challenge, so it's cool if you miss a week, or if you get the bug and need to sew more than four pieces-do what you can, sew what you want, share what you did, just get out of those pants!
And just in case all of that isn't enough, you can also check out all of last year's Summer of No Pants posts. I did some extensive round-ups of different skirt styles with lots and lots and lots of tutorials.

Thank you all for coming along with me on this challenge! I can't wait to see all of your skirts and dresses!

Guest Round-up: Comfy Sews vs. Cozy Knits by Shannon of luvinthemommyhood and versus!

Today I am honored to have our very last guest for The Summer of No Pants be Shannon from luvinthemommyhood and versus. Since versus is all about sewing vs. knitting, I asked Shannon if she could give us a round-up of some of the best fabric and knit skirts out there. Here's Shannon:

hi everyone! i'm shannon from the blog luvinthemommyhood & also my newest blog versus! last year i started a friendly, virtual competition between knits and sews! we simulate a boxing ring and let the crafts duke it out so to speak and then readers vote! versus is the home to all things "comfy sews VS cozy knits" so pop on over and say hi sometime!

i'm so excited to be here on hideous! dreadful! stinky! for the "summer of no pants series"! i love this series! marigold asked me to join in with a round of "comfy sews VS cozy knits" on skirts for you all (you can find dress showdowns here)! i love skirts and dresses. i would prefer to wear a skirt/dress over pants any day. in fact i just made my very first dress for myself (check out the tutorial here)! i'm so happy i did! so here's a fun roundup so that all of you will feel encouraged and inspired to whip up some skirts this summer! the only question is which side will you be on? knits or sews?

let the battle begin...ding...ding...ding...

ok...get your vote on (here's the link to the poll in case it doesn't show up):

Guest Tutorial: Breezy Braided Beach Skirt with Lissa of Lissa's Fripperies!

My first guest this morning is Lissa from Lissa's Fripperies. Lissa likes to make softies for her sons and brothers-in-law, although it is always a challenge to make a new robot or dinosaur. She also tries to sew each of her boys a couple of button down shirts every year. She grew up sewing with her mother who got her started on cutting out the patterns and then gradually promoted her to sewing. Today she's bringing us a tutorial for a Breezy Braided Beach Skirt. Here's Lissa:

Hi! I'm Lissa and I am a mother of three boys. I only had sisters growing up so it was rather a shock. I love to sew for them and myself (guess which one gets put off), and my tiny niece and nephew. My most favorite projects have been an Easter dress I made for my best friend in college, a pink and bluebird dress I just made for my tiny niece, and a Ton-Ton softie (tutorial coming soon!) I made for several guys for Christmas. In between projects I also read voraciously, play the piano, draw, embroider, scrapbook, and crochet. Then there's housework. You know you just try to get a balance right? Before being a mom I taught elementary school music (very briefly). I love being a mom, and now I'm loving getting to sew for myself a little. Come join me at my rough and ready little blog, with my little Singer workhorse (work pony?) and learn to make a skirt!

You can find more skirts by Lissa in the following places:

Guest Review: Sara of Sew Sweetness Reviews The Meghan Dress by The Scientific Seamstress

My guest today is Sara from Sew Sweetness. Sara is one of those amazingly talented people who just seems to churn out beautifully crafted work with hardly any effort at all. Of course, we all know it takes a lot of work to get to that level, but she seriously is like SuperSewerWoman! I was thrilled when she agreed to make and review the Meghan Peasant Dress for us.
Here's Sara:

Hello everyone! My name is Sara from Sew Sweetness, and I am so excited to be guest posting for the summer of no pants! I love the idea of sewing clothing for yourself. There is nothing that fits better, or will look more unique, than an article of clothing that you have made yourself! You can accentuate the areas of your body you like, and play down the ones that you don't.

I know that sewing clothing can seem like a daunting task. But it doesn't have to be scary, and it doesn't have to be hard. Today, I am going to review a sewing pattern that even a beginner can complete! If you enjoyed my review, I would love it if you checked out the other sewing pattern reviews on my blog! Thank you Marigold!

The Jamie Dress

For those of you who love the Sis Boom patterns, check out Sara's review of the Sis Boom Jamie Dress and Jamie Dress sew along she hosted earlier this year.
She also offers a tutorial on how to add a waistband to the back of the Jamie Dress.
And be sure to check out the previous post to see how to win a Meghan Peasant Dress pattern from The Scientific Seamstress.

Guest Post: Finding the Perfect Fit with Candace from Shabby Apple

My guest this morning is Candace from Shabby Apple. If you've never visited this online dress shop, you have been missing out! The philosophy behind Shabby Apple is to offer dresses for real women that are comfortable, stylish and are complete outfits that you can wear "without wearing a tank top, cardigan or long slip." The whole collection is amazing. Today Candace will tell you about Shabby Apple's Fit to Flatter feature and give you details about finding the right fit for your body type.
After you've drooled over the dresses, you can visit Shabby Apple anytime between now and June 17th and use the promo code hideousdreadfulstinky10off for 10% off your purchase.

Dresses from Shabby Apple

Dress shopping can be so difficult sometimes. The dresses never seem to be the right length, and either accentuate unwanted curves or make you feel like you are wearing a gunnysack. Online dress shopping can be even more difficult and risky, but Shabby Apple is here to help! Shabby Apple has created a Fit to Flatter section on the website to make online dress shopping easier and less risky.

Finding the perfect fit is easy at Shabby Apple. You begin the process by answering a few easy questions, which determine your body type. At that point, you are presented with information on what types of dresses to look for. Not only are you given tips on dress shopping, but you are shown pictures of Shabby Apple dresses that will best flatter your figure. If you click on the image of a particular dress, you will learn why that dress will flatter your figure. It’s so easy and fun.

The most important part to finding the perfect fit is understanding what body type you are and then what characteristics of dresses will flatter and which will not. Here are some tips from the website for different body types.

Washington Square Park
Hourglass
Look for pieces that accentuate your curves and have a fitted waist. Fitted clothing, straight skirts and belted waists are best for you. The Washington Square Park dress pictured above accentuates the waist of an hourglass figure.

Conservatory Garden
Apple
Look for clothing that accentuates your legs and arms. Loose-fitting waists, empire waists, short sleeves and knee-length skirts are best for you. The Conservatory Garden dress has a fully lined skirt that keeps you covered and comfortable, and the above the knee cut shows of your legs.

Cortez
Pear
Look for clothing with wide collars and details around the bust to balance your lower body. A-line skirts, flared skirts, fitted waists and belts worn at waistline are best for you. The ruffled collar, a-line shape and waist tie make the Cortez dress perfect for Pears.

La Tour Eiffel
Pencil
Look for clothing with detail at the bust and hips. Puff sleeves, full skirts, ruching at hips and belts at waist give the appearance of a curvier figure. The stripes on the top and the flared a-line skirt of the La Tour Eiffel dress creates curves for the Pencil figure.

Tuileries
Athletic
Look for fitted clothing and clothing that drapes well over muscular figures. Fabrics with stretch, knee length skirts and feminine details like puff sleeves and ruffles are best for you. The flouncy ruffles of the Tuileries dress adds a feminine shape to the bodice.

Marseille
Womanly
Look for clothing that draws attention to your face and elongates your silhouette. Vertical stripes, collars and details at the neck, dark colors, flared skirts and well-fitted clothing are best for you. The Marseille dress has vertical stripes that make the figure longer and leaner, and the flared collar draws attention to the face and shoulders, balancing out the hips.

Ingrid
Tall
Look for clothing with belts or ties at the waist to break up silhouette. Your height is complimented with patterns and feminine details such as ruffles and sashes. The empire waist and pretty ruffle details of the Ingrid dress are lovely on Tall women.

Ain't She Sweet
Short
Look for clothing that lengthens your silhouette. Vertical stripes, solid colors, fitted clothing and empire waists are best for you. The high-banded waist makes legs appear longer, and the solid color and fitted style of the Ain't She Sweet dress add height to Short statures.

Finding the perfect fit can be a challenge but Shabby Apple has tried to make things simpler by giving you tips on fits and showing you pictures of dresses that will flatter and make you feel like the beautiful woman you are! Head over to www.shabbyapple.com and start your journey on finding the perfect fit for your body.
