Greetings, readers of Hideous! Dreadful! Stinky! I'm Paige from Final Clothes-Out. My blog is all about bargain-hunting, and part of that is knowing when you should just make something yourself. Like a Halloween costume! I'm here to show you my easy, no-sew Halloween idea that cost me less than $5.
I'm dressing up as Bellatrix Lestrange, of Harry Potter fame. At first glance that might seem pretty elaborate, but the breakdown is actually very simple. I only need five things:
Sadly (or awesomely?) I already have four of them: I know my wavy hair can deliver on the crazy, I have a wand leftover from going as Hermione last year, I've been holding onto a black lace skirt since I was 18, and I have black shoes I use for historical reenactments (please, don't be intimidated by my cool hobbies).
All I need is a corset. I'm pretty sure I'll never need one again, so I was looking to make it as inexpensively as possible.
Enter my new favorite material: FELT. I picked up three sheets (two to use, one as a back-up) at JoAnn for 39 cents each. Then I wandered over to the accessories area and scored a few yards of thin black ribbon for $1.99.
I held the sheets horizontally and used a hole-puncher to make openings for the ribbon.
The felt might be too thick for you to punch both sheets at once, so just do them one at a time, lining them up carefully so the openings are parallel.
Once you have holes in both of the sheets, string the ribbon through the same way you would string a shoelace:
Now turn the half-finished "garment" around and punch similar holes on the other side. I decided to put the holes slightly closer together for the front, but you don't have to.
When you're ready to try it on, string ribbon through the front holes. I suppose you could do this before you want to wear it, but you'll just have to untie one of the ends to put it on.
Piece of cake! And the great thing is, because it's felt it's the most comfortable corset ever (something I never thought I’d say).
Have you used felt to make anything lately? Will it make an appearance in your Halloween costume? Anybody else rocking a faux-corset this year?

Wasn't that cool? I love how elaborate it looks but it's just felt, a hole punch and some ribbon! And I love last year's Hermione costume, too. Check out more from Paige on her blog Final Clothes-Out and in her Etsy shop featuring gorgeous bridal jewelry, Little White Chapel.
