My latest home project was to replace my super nasty dining set. We bought a Craigslist set for $100 just under five years ago when my first son was only a few months old. For some reason, at the time and with a baby who was not mobile and did not yet eat solid foods, white fabric dining chairs seemed like a good idea. They were already in used condition when we bought them, and I'm sure you can imagine how much spaghetti, ketchup, paint (the dining table doubles as our craft table), and, yes, urine has spilled onto these not-even-close-to-being-white-anymore chairs over the past five years. So much that I'm not even going to put up a picture because it's too embarrassing! So when we saw a simple set at a garage sale for $40 we snatched it up. The set isn't any prettier than what I already had, but these had a fabric chair pad rather than being being entirely covered in fabric, and the whole set cost less than chair covers.
I started doing some research, mostly cruising around
Pinterest, and found a great
tutorial for reupholstering dining chairs. I browsed around a lot of fabrics online, but couldn't bring myself to spend much on covering furniture that wasn't super-high quality to begin with and would continue to get spills and messes. Lucky for me, I have a fantastic discount fabric store nearby, and I found some very thick, good quality upholstery fabric that was dark and had a nice floral design that will help hide some of mess for just $7/yard. I only needed two yards to cover four chairs, and by adding some extra batting to the existing foam and rounding the shape a bit, I think the new chairs look pretty darn good!
