My dad got me a dress form for my birthday last week! Huck named it Cinderella, and I immediately started researching patterns and looking at dresses to make my first dress. I really love this Beda Dress from Anthropologie:
So I went to Jo-Ann's and found this pattern:
It is Simplicity 2403 and is one of their "Project Runway" inspired patterns. I picked up a pretty coral colored fabric, and I think I am going to do the first dress fairly straight from the pattern. Then, once I am comfortable with actually having made a dress from a pattern, I'll pick up some white material and make something closer to the first image (flatter collar, fuller skirt, cap sleeves, etc.). I'm a little nervous, as I rarely work from patterns and in the past I've messed up and gotten pretty frustrated when I've tried. But I was such a novice sewer last time I made an attempt, I'm hoping to do better now that I have some experience under my belt.
I'm going to try to get my material all cut out tonight. Wish me luck!

Looks like a great pattern to start with and fairly simple design so lots of room for small adjustments too.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the finished product!
I can't wait to see it! I love buying patterns but I hate sewing from them I always tweak patters quite severely when i sew (just to make they actually work). I've learned to view them ask more of inspiration than a blueprint, I think that helps me get less frustrated when I have to do lots of altering. Anyways I feel with your pattern apprehension
ReplyDeleteLooks awesome.. It's beautiful... I love, love, love to sew.. My problem is, I just can't follow a pattern.. I can look at something and sew it, but them darn patterns.. lol.. Great Job!!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that the dress form helps me ease some of that frustration. I won't have to try the half-finished project on over and over and prick myself with pins and try to figure out what the heck is going on in the mirror. I didn't cut my material last night--my husband was "strumming a guitar" (a guitar app on his fancy phone) to help put the baby to sleep, and I passed out. . . maybe naptime today :)
ReplyDeleteJust discovered your blog (thanks to Creation Corner) & love it! I'm going to have to get a dress form one of these days. Looking forward to how your dress turns out. I'm now a follower:)
ReplyDeleteLove it! I like to sew, but I've never done anything bigger than a purse...

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how your dress turns out Mar!! I've been wanting to start sewing for so long! I can quilt, but quilting seems so much easier than all of that complicated pattern stuff! I have about 4 books on sewing and I'm intimidated to even start looking through them! I think you should have a video tutorial on sewing your first dress to ease my fears and help get me started!! :) Yes - a lovely idea if I do say so myself!
ReplyDeleteOh! And I love your Dad's present! He's so sweet!!!
And I love the idea of no pants for the summer!! I completely agree with the whole jeans thing - I'm sick of jeans!!!!!!
