My brother-in-law is the main cook for his household (not sure how my sister avoided the cooking gene, as it is dominant on both sides) so for his birthday last Monday I made him a manly apron. I was going to buy him one off of Etsy, but there was just a bunch of crap on there! For some reason, "masculine" is translated as "covered in hideous, bright, overwhelming patterns of cars or flames or sports team logos" or "appliques of barbecues and t-bone steaks that are masculine in theory but end up looking cutesy and not manly at all" or "very boring black." I found one apron I liked, and it was $60, so forget it. But I think I may have hit on a neglected market here, and maybe this is something to focus on. In general, Etsy lacks nice gifts for men. I digress.
This apron is brown with an olive green lining. The straps are orange with a simple geometric pattern, also used to line the pocket. I used D-rings to make an adjustable neck strap, and I also attached a D-ring to the pocket so that a tea towel could hang off of it for wiping up spills or whatever.
For the tea towel (doesn't sound manly enough--coffee towel?): David spent some time in Hungary a while ago for a "work" trip. He would call my sister, who was sitting at home alone with their three children, and tell her about how beautiful Hungarian women were. He would go on and on and on about it. And on. So I made this freezer print for him to remind him of the Hungarian women and their legendary beauty.
